Smart Backflow Prevention Made Simple
When Anglian Water’s smart meter rollout uncovered unexpected backflow risks across their network, they needed a fast, effective retrofit solution. Partnering with Honeywell and using our NRv2 device, they found a simple fix that slotted seamlessly into existing infrastructure—protecting water quality without costly disruption.
The Problem
In 2010, Anglian Water began rolling out its Automated Meter Reading (AMR) smart metering programme using Honeywell’s V200 and V210 meters. While this new technology offered huge advancements in data capture and system monitoring, it also uncovered a hidden issue.
Honeywell’s smart meters helped detect reverse flow – water moving away from the property and back into the supply network – which poses a serious risk to water quality. This new visibility flagged a widespread problem: many existing boundary boxes had manifolds with failed or missing non-return valves (NRVs), meaning backflow was going unnoticed and unmitigated.
With the integrity of the supply network at risk, Anglian Water needed a fast, reliable, and cost-effective retrofit solution.

The Solution
Enter the NRv2. Designed with simplicity and speed in mind, the NRv2 screws directly into the meter port, sitting between the manifold and the water meter. This makes it ideal for retrofitting – no need to dig out or replace existing infrastructure.
Where failed non-return valves were identified, Anglian Water installed the NRv2 to restore backflow protection quickly and efficiently. With no need for major works or disruption, the NRv2 provided an immediate safeguard to protect water quality across their network.
A smart solution to a newly revealed risk – keeping the water flowing safely in the right direction.
